New Faculty Positions

The Design Department is currently recruiting for the following positions:

Design Theory and CriticismThis Assistant or Associate Professor position is available for an individual working in the area of design theory, methodology and history. This 9-month position requires a specialist who is deeply engaged in inquiries on the meanings and processes of design with strong interdisciplinary knowledge and interests in design education. The candidate should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, creativity, an interest in teaching, research accomplishments and professional leadership appropriate for a major research university, and solid competency in design theory, design methods, or design history. The person filling this position will be expected to establish or carry forward a research program utilizing some aspect of design theory, design methodology or history. Duties of this position include teaching 4 to 5 courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels; mentoring graduate students; developing and maintaining an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity; and participating in curriculum development and university/community service. Interior ArchitectureThis Assistant or Associate Professor position requires expertise in interior architecture and a specialization in one of the following: furniture design, design of specialized environments, interior design theory or history, sustainable design, or lighting design. The candidate must have a strong record of publications or recognized creative work in interiors. Professional experience in corporate and/or institutional interior design is highly desirable. The person filling this position will be expected to carry forward a promising research program in some aspect of interior design or professionally recognized creative practice. Duties of this position include teaching studio and/or lecture classes in various aspects of interior architecture on both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and linking instruction to other disciplines such as lighting design, art and design history, techno-cultural studies, theatre design, textiles and fashion, and digital computing. Visual CommunicationsThis Assistant Professor position requires a specialist who excels in print media with additional experience in such area as packaging design, book design, information graphics or environmental graphics. The candidate should demonstrate intellectual curiosity and creativity, an interest in teaching, solid competency in typography and print media. A background in creative practice or industry experience and in history or theory of graphic design is desired. The person filling this position will be expected to establish or carry forward a research program utilizing some aspect typography and visual communication. Duties of this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate studio and lecture courses in graphic design, and linking instruction to other disciplines such as art, techno-cultural studies, theatre, textiles and fashion, and computer science.
